Key details about Vieques


Location: - Vieques is part of Puerto Rico and is situated about 8 miles (13 kilometers) to the east of the main island. - It is accessible by a short ferry ride from the town of Ceiba on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico or by a small airport, Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS), which has flights connecting to San Juan and other nearby destinations.

Size and Population: - Vieques is approximately 21 miles (34 kilometers) long and 4 miles (6 kilometers) wide. - As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Vieques had a population of around 9,000 residents. 

History: - Vieques has a complex history, including indigenous Taíno settlement and later Spanish colonization. - The island was used by the United States Navy as a bombing range and testing ground for several decades. The military presence on the island ceased in 2003, leading to the return of much of the land to civilian use. 

Beaches: - Vieques is renowned for its pristine beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters. 

Wildlife and Nature: - The island is known for its natural beauty and relatively undeveloped landscapes. Much of the land remains protected, including the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife enthusiasts can explore diverse ecosystems, including beaches, forests, and mangrove areas.
